How What You’re Eating Might Be Causing Your Breakouts

After making it through Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, and Easter, we are all ready for some healthier eating, right? Adopting a more nutritious eating routine won’t just get you ready for summer—it might also help improve your skin.

How, you might ask? The diet we take in has lasting effects on our body’s wellbeing, some more noticeable than others. As your largest organ, your skin might be the biggest giveaway that it’s time to make some smarter food choices. So what foods might be starting those epic breakouts?

Cut back on the sugar

We know, not the most original direction, but it’s a popular diet tip for a reason! Excess sugar (specifically processed sugars) can cause your body’s blood sugar to spike rapidly, which in turn will jumpstart your body’s inflammatory reaction to it. What happens when your body reacts to sugar like that? It produces more oil, which is the leading instigator of acne.

You can keep your greasy foods…in moderation

Have you ever been told that eating burgers and fries will lead to some unsightly spots on your face? Well, there actually hasn’t been a clear tie between the two, so scientists aren’t quite ready to point the finger at fats as a cause of acne. However, just because it isn’t known to cause acne doesn’t mean you should go overboard with the greasy, fatty foods. Like everything else indulgent in life, moderation is best.

Dairy-free…with a twist

Dairy has long been considered an enemy of the state to your skin, thanks again to a response in your body to dairy that can sometimes cause an increase in oil production. Not all dairy is to blame, though. More full-fat dairy like whole milk, yogurt, and cheese have not been shown to increase your chances of developing acne, while “healthier” choices like skim milk have. If you’re curious about whether or not dairy is irritating your acne, try cutting it out of your diet for a few weeks, then slowly add full-fat dairy back in to see if the acne returns.

No matter what might be causing your skin’s acne breakouts, you don’t have to continue living with it! Sebacia’s acne treatment targets oil by using gold microparticles and a laser light from a laser in your dermatologist’s office to reduce the oil production in the sebaceous glands. After three Sebacia Acne Treatments, you will start to notice a difference in your acne, with most patients seeing incredible results after 6-12 months.

Contact your dermatologist today to see if they offer the Sebacia treatment, and in the meantime, give your diet a makeover of its own to help support clearer skin by summer!
